ALLEN INT'L

Towards a Cleaner Songdo, <Allen Salon>

Have you ever walked by the Chicken Stairs of Dormitory 2? Or studied in any of the common rooms? If so, you've likely seen a giant heap of unorganized trash – leftover chicken, vinyl bags, all carelessly tossed piled on top of one another in the same bin. For this semester’s Allen Salon, 'Nana and Shimshime,' one of the participating groups in the 2017 Yonsei-Nexon RC Creative Platform, stepped up to introduce the topic of recycling to their fellow Allenians. Yoosun Lee and Hyewon Jeong, two representatives from the group, gave a fun and interactive lecture on the current state of waste management on Yonsei International Campus.

According to the Korean Ministry of Environment, there's been a 10% increase in waste generation from 2010 to 2015, and this number is only going to rise without the active participation of the public. So, what exactly can we do?

For starters, we can learn how to recycle the right way. It is important to know what to do with ambiguous recyclables; for example, did you know rubber is categorized as plastic? In their presentation, Yoosun and Hyewon discussed proper recycling practices and what people can do at home to reduce the overall cost of waste management. They also shed light on what the custodians on campus had to say about the poor recycling habits of RC students. It’s important to keep in mind that taking 3 extra minutes of our time to properly sort our trash can make a huge difference. Thanks to Nana and Shimshime, we learned that saving the environment can start small, right here at Yonsei International Campus.
