APPENZELLER INT'L

'Zeller Runners' with Social Distancing

Since social distancing has put a firm ban on everyone’s outdoor lives, keeping fit has been a concern of many. Staying indoors and taking charge of one’s diet is a big change since people face a conspicuous decrease in daily activity. The skyrocketing demand for indoor workout gadgets following the COVID19 outbreak serves as proof that health has become a major interest for everyone, regardless of quarantine. One could cycle, weightlift or even dance indoors on a yoga mat. However, nothing can be a proper substitute for a fresh run outdoors.

Zeller Runners is a recurring activity of Appenzeller International House with a distinct pattern; Professor Denton only hosts it on days when the air quality is ‘green’, or when the pollution level is under 50. On fresh air days, Professor Denton posts a survey on the Zeller Runners group chat to assess the best hour to host the program. Once the time is settled, the run hour is announced to the whole of Appenzeller International House and is open for all Zellers to take part. There are even some spontaneous morning runs, which also has a surprising number of participants.

The program sticks to its motto of ‘social distancing’ by having all participants who gather in Songdo International Campus keep the 2 meters of social distance requirements. Zellers who haven’t moved into the dormitories can also run on their deserted routes. All participating Zellers stay connected throughout the run by joining the Zeller Runners Discord voice channel while tuning into its music podcast. Students verify their run hours by uploading a selfie before the run and a screenshot of their Nike Run log or any pace-making application on their device after the session on the Zeller Runners group chat.
