    Is English conversation merely a subject to study for language certificate or language exam? Don’t we have any place to freely talk into English about our daily lives even though our English is grammatically incorrect? For those students who are eager to have a chance to speak in English or interested in English conversation, Allen house prepared a conversational platform where every student can freely talk about their small life stuff. On April 14th, RA Minjeong Kang and Hyeongchan Yun progressed <Speaking Mentoring> program because there were calls of several students who hoped to take the privilege of being a member of an international house but couldn’t due to current COVID-19 crisis.

    <Speaking Mentoring> seems to be a program where RAs who are fluent in English teach English expressions to RCs if we only look at the name of the program. However, unlike the common assumption, the program was composed mostly of active engagement and conversations of RC students. In the first session, the topic was “What is your favorite singer and song?” When a famous singer was introduced by a student, other students shared how they feel great about the singer and even when the publicly less famous singer was introduced, students could have great chance to know a novel singer in a novel genre.

    Students used basic expressions provided in the beginning of the program, and many introduced their favorite singers in their style of expressions. Thanks to the various expressions, the program was held naturally just as being progressed in Korean rather than academic speech contest. RA Hyeongchan Yun expressed satisfied feeling on the program “The topic was about sharing your favorite singer where everyone can ask and answer in their daily life rather than academic area. I believe that was the basic reason why students could participate without stress and did not feel any burden while talking in English. I hope that there could be more of such various and helpful programs that can raise status of Allen as international house."
