Do You Hear My Music Beat? The Making of the <Allen Playlist>

As more days are spent indoors, there are fewer interactions between people and people become more submerged in themselves. The same goes for music. Though people feel various emotions in their daily lives—sadness, joy, anger, and loneliness, to name a few—their playlists to address the different emotions stay the same or branch out in a limited manner. To change this phenomenon for the better, RA Park Siyeon came up with a program named . The program was organized to create a space where different students, who inevitably have unique tastes, can come together and share their music. Ten students were chosen on a first come first served basis for the program. The small number was to provide a safe and interactive environment for what may be a more personal interaction.

The program had prior preparations before the day of the meeting online. Students were told to capture a screenshot of a playlist they listen to during their everyday lives. Along with this, students also chose an artist and song to recommend.

The actual program took place on April 7th, from 8-9 pm through a Kakao chatroom. The chat began with students sharing their playlists, their recommended artists, and simple reasons why they chose their music. After this initial interaction, students listened to each other’s music and commented on them. Some found common interests, others were introduced to new interests. One student found the program a creative outlet for sharing their music and found it interesting to approach music through categorization. Many students found it encouraging that though they had never met the other students, some shared similar musical interests: a bonding, in some cases, they had not even been able to find among their friends.

Near the end of the program, students came up with a theme related to the freshman Yonsei International Campus life and selected at minimum five songs to fit their theme. Then, they voted on the playlists they liked best. A playlist for pulling all-nighters received the highest votes. The student who came up with the playlist received a musical note key ring as a prize and it was delivered to their home.

After the program, all the playlists were collected to post on the official Allen Instagram page so that other Allenians could also listen to the playlists. Though miles apart, allowed for students to form common spaces of interest and expand each other's tastes through exposure to other students’ music. It is no wonder that the program was popular enough to be hosted again on April 14, again from 8-9 pm.
