ALLEN INT'L

Allenians Gather to Take their Studies to a Another Level!

What can we do for freshman students who run into a brick wall called “assignments” and “exams” which is seemingly insuperable? What hardships do freshman students undergo when they first cope with their studies as college students? What can the RC Education of Yonsei do for freshman students who cannot reach out for help easily to their peers or upperclassman due to the Covid-19 crisis? Allen House raised these questions and organized the <Allen Tutoring> program to provide a platform where RC students can progress on their demanding college studies along with others. The main purpose of the <Allen Tutoring> program is to lighten the burden of RC students by providing a good opportunity to study with students taking the same class and upperclassmen RAs that already completed the course.

Before the tutoring program began in full-scale, the tutoring RAs gathered to discuss which tutoring courses to open. Courses in which freshman students experience difficulties in setting study plans were on the list. Then, the RAs singled out courses that would be a lot easier if there was a platform where students can interact with others. And of course, the RAs decided to open tutoring courses that they completed before to provide help in depth. After endless discussion, Allen House chose to open Mathematics for Economics, General Chemistry, and Eastern Civilization for the tutoring program.

Currently, 3 students for Mathematics for Economics, 11 students for General Chemistry, and 24 students for Eastern civilization are participating in the tutoring program. Students in the program are required to carry out weekly tasks where steady efforts in reviewing their class materials are needed. If they have any questions regarding the contents of the class, fellow students and the RA would provide profound answers. The RAs also provide additional materials that might enhance the comprehension of RC students with their course. Through this process, students are not only able to cut off procrastination, but they are also able to understand their courses better.

The <Allen Tutoring> is still proactive as it is planned as a long-term program for the whole semester. RC students participating in the tutoring program are experiencing the merits of an interactive peer-learning platform in person. By dealing with the demanding materials with fellow students and the upperclassman RAs, the <Allen Tutoring> has guided students in performing better on their academics and helped to be less reluctant about the difficult studies. Many students have expressed in their reports that the tutoring was utile, and it really helped them in having a good grasp of how college studies should be conducted. Some students have even commented that the tutoring was so helpful that they are doing well on their quizzes and expecting a satisfactory mark on their scores for the semester. We hope that the <Allen Tutoring> program would finish all right until the rest of the semester and that students would earn more help from the program.
