ALLEN INT'L

<Allen Essay Tutoring>

Being an international house in Yonsei RC, most of the RC students are majoring in UD, HASS, and Asian Studies at Underwood International College (UIC). Students at UIC take Common Curriculum (CC) to enhance their skills in fields of liberal arts, and it consists of various areas of study including history, literature, language, research methodology, et cetera. However, one common feature of CC is that it consists of a lot of writing in different styles and formats. Thus, Seoyeon Chang (2022-1 Allen Int’l House RA, '21) designed the only LLC program of the semester, <Allen Essay Tutoring> to help students in UIC get accustomed to academic writing and fix their common mistakes in writing.

From March to June, on every Thursday of the second week, 4 Allen RC students were selected for the essay tutoring. They submitted the essay that they want to investigate with RA the day before the mentoring and RA prepared for the session by reading thoroughly over the essay and writing down comments. All the sessions were conducted in ZOOM for an hour for each student. Each session began with asking RC students their concerns regarding their writing skills and styles. RA tried to give them comments on various aspects from contents to styles to habits. Then, RA and RC students examine the pre-submitted essay in that RA gave students her personal opinions in terms of contents and styles. The session ended up with a short Q&A session regards to the writing but also regards to school life at large.

RC students, after joining the tutoring program, were content with the session, leaving the message that they could scrutinize their essay from the viewpoint of the third person and understand different styles of writing better and so on. <Allen Essay Tutoring> was a great opportunity for both RC students and RA that they could learn a lot regarding writing.
